Stitched with Love: The Family Spirit that Makes EFWA Special

Forget the stereotypical image of the fashion industry – a world of fierce competition and fleeting connections. Eco Fashion Week Australia (EFWA) paints a different picture. Here, a remarkable family thrives, united by a shared passion for sustainable fashion.  EFWA transcends a typical event; it's a vibrant ecosystem where inclusivity, support, and a collective drive to make a positive impact flourish. This unique community, like a family, serves as an inspiring model, demonstrating how collaboration and kindness can fuel a powerful movement for a more sustainable future.

A Symphony of Support

From the very beginning of EFWA, the platform has nurtured an environment unlike any other. Mothers of the models like May Lee, who have been with EFWA since its inception, speak of the enduring friendships formed backstage. These bonds extend far beyond models, encompassing designers and fellow moms, creating a symphony of support that resonates throughout the entire organisation. This spirit of camaraderie extends to the runway itself. In May's own words," I feel honoured to be part of the EFWA family.  It’s great being part of a community who are all sharing a common goal."

Models like Hayley Beardman, the Model Coordinator and model herself, describe EFWA's events as more akin to joyous family reunions than high-pressure fashion shows. It's a space where everyone uplifts each other, from seasoned models offering guidance to dedicated parents who become a second family. Hayley's story, where EFWA offered unwavering support during a challenging time, perfectly exemplifies this spirit. " Participating in EFWA’s showcases feels more like joining a close-knit family than just another fashion event. It’s a unique blend of camaraderie, support, and genuine care. We know we can rely on each other, from fellow models to the dedicated parents who become like our own. It’s a nurturing and welcoming environment, unlike any other show. Even in challenging times, like in 2018 when my son, Austin, was just 3 months old, EFWA’s exceptional support allowed me to return to the catwalk on the Finale show, a gesture rarely seen in most fashion events. This is the essence of EFWA – it’s not merely an event; it’s a family.", said Hayley.

A Legacy of Inspiration, Stitched Together

This supportive environment extends beyond mere camaraderie. Former models like Emily Craig, now a sustainable fashion designer for the upcoming Sustainable Fashion Festival presented by EFWA, credit the EFWA family with providing invaluable guidance during their modeling days. "I remember after our show in 2019, we all got on the stage to celebrate the week-long event and everyone behind the scenes – models, designers, volunteers – the energy of the EFWA family was and is always so high!  So much support and love was on that stage that night – it still inspires me today.", said Emily while reminiscing about her memories of past EFWA events.

A Journey of Collective Growth

The impact of EFWA transcends the confines of the runway. Parents like May Lee have witnessed their daughters blossom not just as models, but also as passionate advocates for sustainable fashion. She said," It has been a great experience for my daughter to start her modelling career with the EFWA team.  Not only did she gain experience but we both learned so much about sustainable fashion.  It has been an eye opener for both my daughter and myself.  I would definitely encourage any parent to support their child if they would like to start a career in modelling, especially in sustainable fashion.  We are a community, and we love what we do."

Their shared journey highlights how EFWA fosters not only self-expression but also environmental consciousness.  This sentiment is echoed by Tia Semi, a model who is now joining the ranks of designers. Here's what Tia said when asked about EFWA, "EFWA embraced me and my uniqueness. I am not the same person when I first started my journey with EFWA 2018- I am bolder, and I am more confident in who I am and what I can achieve and contribute. I am more than willing to be the cheerleader and advocate for anybody else who needs guidance to find their path. Sustainability and Pacific Island fashion are my mandates- I am now an advocate by default. The Pacific Islands are the first to be affected by rising sea tides, so I have a responsibility to promote sustainability through my fashion label. EFWA has enabled me to be more conscious and dig deeper into my intentionality of what I am doing and how it affects Mother Earth."

A Family by Choice, United by Purpose

Jane Milburn, EFWA's Sustainability Advisor, emphasizes the shared values that bind this remarkable community.  In Jane's words," Everyone involved with EFWA has shared values. We value natural fibers, sustainability, as well as kindness and care for all people and things. We all have a common purpose of raising awareness and influencing change in the creation and culture around clothing that is an essential part of living a good life."

EFWA serves as a catalyst, inspiring a global shift in perceptions and practices within sustainable fashion.

Marilyn Wilson, the Fashion Editor of EFWA since 2017, has witnessed the event's evolution and impact firsthand. She said," Making change requires a continuing effort. It’s like dropping pebbles in a pond. Each pebble brings more waves and creates more change. I am very excited to see EFWA has gained its legs and continues to grow, gaining more respect and credibility with each season."

Tayla Parnham, a fashion designer and founder of Fabric of Nature, has been with EFWA since its inception. She highlights the collaborative spirit at EFWA. "Zuhal (EFWA founder) is always up for us pitching our own ideas for the showcase," she says. "It's very collaborative, not like any other fashion show I've seen." This supportive environment extends beyond just designers. "The models become your close friends, you get to know their parents," Tayla adds. "Everyone is passionate about sustainability and offers their support in any way they can." EFWA's impact on Tayla's career is clear. "The EFWA community means a lot to me," she concludes. "They've given me so much support and opportunity. I wouldn't have learned as much or come as far without their help."

For models like Lauren DiMeglio, EFWA's influence extends far beyond the runway.  It has shaped their personal journeys, instilled valuable life lessons, and connected them with a network of incredible individuals.  " EFWA has made a massive impact on my personal journey, it has taught me so many life lessons and has given me the opportunity to meet incredible individuals from all around the world. The years of getting to meet and know Zuhal, her family, and the other amazing friends that we still hold close to this day, was an incredibly valuable experience that I am so grateful for.", Lauren said.
